What does change across the island is the ground. A thirty-six point survey of the borough’s elevation spans 5.8 feet to 355.6 feet, and every sampled point above 130 feet is in the middle of the island or on the North Shore. The south end sits below that high ground.
That is not scenery. Two lots the same size on different ground need different machinery and a different route out for the material: a graded haul up to the street on one property, a flat run across the lot on the next. It is one of the first things we look at.

What the island changes about a job
Two property conditions, and the second one settles the method.
Two property conditions come up here constantly, and which one you have changes the method more than the size of the building does: a house standing free on its own lot, or a semi-attached house sharing a wall with the one beside it.
Where the wall is shared it is structural for both houses, so it stays standing and gets supported while the rest comes off it. Where the house stands free, the constraints move outward to the ground around it: the driveway, the trees, the setback, and what is under the house.
These are also lots the owner intends to keep using afterwards, which is why the route the material takes across the property is part of the job here rather than an afterthought to it.
